Serious i3 Security Problems

In May, 2018, Keen Security Lab posted information about multiple security vulnerabilities in various modules of current BMW automobiles including the i3. These vulnerabilities could be exploited via the OBD or USB port which would require physical access to an i3. However, whenever an i3 owner/less...

Don't waste your time on the North American NEXT (wide-screen professional navigation only) 2018-1 or 2018-2 version because the 2019-1 version is now available as a torrent file.

Re: Run on flat tyres

Or carry a spare if it is convenient for you. I do. I carry a tire plug kit instead of taking up space inside our car with a spare tire and wheel. A plug kit is much less expensive than a spare wheel and tire. Applying a plug is also easier than changing a wheel and tire. However, a plug might not ...

If your car is still under warranty, fixing this should be covered by the warranty.

Re: Charging problem?

The i3's low-cost charging algorithm has been very buggy. It has worked correctly in some system software versions and has been totally broken in other versions. Your i3 might have one of the buggy software versions. I don't know the status of the low-cost charging algorithm in the current system so...

Re: Inaccurate speed reading

Speed reading is consistently 2 mph lower than actual speed (street speed monitors). I have heard this is normal for a BMW. Normal would be for the displayed speed to be higher than the actual speed to make it less likely to be ticketed for speeding. Apparently, the variance of the displayed speed ...

Re: Run on flat tyres

With the limited range of our early EV's, BMW designed much of an i3 for maximum range. Run-flat tires, being heavier and stiffer than the standard low rolling resistance i3 tires, would reduce the available range. This trade-off might be acceptable for some current i3 drivers, but it wouldn't be fo...

Re: Sun Shield

I have always liked the simplicity and low cost of the "magic spring" sunshades that change shape from rectangles to smaller circles when twisting 2 adjacent corners toward each other. I have the jumbo size that has a reflective mirror coating on one side. Twisted into circles and secured ...

Re: Cleaning the high gloss black bonnet/roof/rear

Going back to the roof, has anyone used such as HD wax as a main top coat? In case you're not aware, the roof of an i3 without a sunroof is carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) covered by some sort of clear coating which might not be paint. It isn't thermoplastic painted black like the hood (bonn...

Re: Warranty replacement of 12 V battery

suspecting something going on with the dc-dc converter or how the car maintains the 12v batteries. You could insert an inexpensive 12 V voltmeter into the auxiliary power port below the center of the dashboard. It would clearly indicate when the DC-DC converter is on because the 12 V voltage would ...
