For fellow iPhone users, I noticed that after upgrading to iOS8 that my bluetooth audio became intermittent (muting randomly every few seconds). A web search showed this was very common in a variety of cars, and also affected the phone connection.
I fixed the problem by resetting the phone via General>Reset>Reset All Settings and re-pairing the phone with the i3.
