Inspired by a Facebook posting in the BMW i3 group, I replicated the protocol ~2:30AM this morning.
I drove 13 miles to a favorite benchmark loop:
Temperature 60F.
The first loop ran at 20 mph, windows up, no heater, no stop and provided:
The second loop ran at 20 mph, windows down, heater at 84F, max fan, no stop and provided:
First loop:
Second loop:
Heater max, fan max, windows down @60F (15C) effect:

First loop:
- 8.8 mi/kWh
- 3 mi
- 3 mi / 8.8 mi/kWh = 0.34 kWh
Second loop:
- 2.7 mi/kWh
- 3 mi
- 3 mi / 2.7 mi/kWh = 1.11 kWh
Heater max, fan max, windows down @60F (15C) effect:
- 1.11 kWh - 0.34 kWh = 0.77 kWh for 11 minutes
- 0.77 kWh * (60/11) = 4.2 kWh each hour
