Hi,

Apparently if an OBD device is left plugged into the port AND I attempt to lock the car, it sets off the car alarm. In my case, a Scangauge II used to monitor REx operation.

Lessons learned.

The workaround, only plug in Scangauge when the car will not be locked.

Yup, it's a safety feature as BMWs were getting broken into, and thieves used the OBD port to make a copy of the key and driving them away.

You can code the feature off btw.

You can code the OBD alarm to off and you can leave the dongles plugged in all the time.

Which OBD should I plug into the diagnostic socket?
stand-alone scanner or a cable like INPA K+DCAN ?

What do you want to do? For reading the codes and engine parameters a wired or bluetooth ELM327 http://amzn.to/2ha6WZv will do, for coding you will need an Ethernet cable http://amzn.to/2gFsbS2

How do you code the alarm feature to off? Is that something you can do through the menus, or do I need a dealer to do that?

Thanks

This is not something the dealership will do for you...and, no, it is not in the menus. BMW wants no part in opening up the car to potential thieves, which is why it was implemented in the first place. You have to either program it yourself, of pay someone else to do it for you.
