My last car had the same shortcoming

Throw your stuff in the great storage hole and it crashes on top of the delicate usb stick

Another option is an L shaped adapter. Depending on which direction you go with the L though, you might cover your aux-in (if you use it) or it might go towards the bottom and not have enough room, or off to one of the sides with the same problem.
