Testing heater effect

Thu Oct 12, 2017 6:45 am

Inspired by a Facebook posting in the BMW i3 group, I replicated the protocol ~2:30AM this morning.

I drove 13 miles to a favorite benchmark loop:

Temperature 60F.

The first loop ran at 20 mph, windows up, no heater, no stop and provided:

The second loop ran at 20 mph, windows down, heater at 84F, max fan, no stop and provided:

First loop:
  • 8.8 mi/kWh
  • 3 mi
  • 3 mi / 8.8 mi/kWh = 0.34 kWh

Second loop:
  • 2.7 mi/kWh
  • 3 mi
  • 3 mi / 2.7 mi/kWh = 1.11 kWh

Heater max, fan max, windows down @60F (15C) effect:
  • 1.11 kWh - 0.34 kWh = 0.77 kWh for 11 minutes
  • 0.77 kWh * (60/11) = 4.2 kWh each hour
