why only 4 years/50Kmiles

Sun Aug 12, 2018 9:41 am

Most auto makers compete about ho can offer the best Warranty
some trust their units an even go 10 years 100k miles.....

why BMW does not even trust the I3 unit even to half of that

and only go to 4years/50k miles??????????????????????

Market and loss limiting. The warranty on BMWs is on the higher end of most. I don't think it is a function of not trusting the design, it's more about what (nearly) everyone else is doing.

FWIW, back when Hyundai was first selling cars in the USA, they were terrible and the only way they could get people to buy them was to put a long warranty on them. There's a perception that by deciding to shorten a warranty, that admits there's a problem, so it would be harder for them to shorten it now, and build it into the price of the vehicle.

The 10 year, 100k warranties are for drivetrains, not the whole car. I'm not sure what is covered under "drivetrain".
Having said that, EV's should be more reliable than ICE cars (fewer moving parts) so perhaps we will see longer warranties in the future.
