Re: Air conditioning failed

It's worth it for Phoenix heat to have the AC working. Because the A/C cools the battery pack, the output power of the battery pack would almost certainly be limited due to overheating due to a non-functional compressor. This would significantly limit the maximum power of the propulsion motor. That...

Re: Air conditioning failed

Well, at least your AC will be working again. Mine is dead. I am going to take it to another BMW shop that claims to have ONE factory trained tech for the i3. I can/will replace the compressor ($1800 from BMW) and let them do the flush and work. Hope it's around $3-4k total. It's worth it for Phoeni...

Re: Which versions of the AC compressor have people had failures with?

he said they only have one tech that was trained on the i3 - but told him it's an air conditioner problem, not an i3 problem. Just an FYI, when I had my AC compressor replaced (under warranty luckily), i had to wait three days for the i3 tech to return from vacation - because of the i3 HV systems e...

Re: Checking Battery Health for Used i3

Agreed that dealers are vague/ secretive about battery health. I honestly think it may be that BMW keeps them in the dark as well and tells them to just listen to what the diagnostic computer says. i3s are still new/rare enough that (most) dealers may not have built up enough experience to know whe...

Re: Which versions of the AC compressor have people had failures with?

I'm also in Phoenix, my AC never was really good when I bought it from the Dealer in Chandler, but now it was only blowing hot air. Took it to the dealer. Long story short, quote to fix air conditioner, brake service and two new tires was $23K. Compressor supposedly shredded apart causing metal sha...

Re: Checking Battery Health for Used i3

They don't publish that info. Especially if you are buying. I had mine checked at the dealer, and he didn't show me any details of the report. Just said "it's 92%" and just had to "believe" him on that. Not that he would be deceiving me on purpose, it's just that if a test is performed, I want to se...

Re: Which versions of the AC compressor have people had failures with?

No AC in 110 degree heat is not good, but dont' want to pay more to "fix" my AC (and possibly have it happen again) than I paid for the entire car! You might have significantly reduced power on very hot days because the A/C compressor also cools the battery pack. With no battery pack cooling, the b...

Re: Warranty Showdown - CPO vs. Carvana vs. Carbiz

Without aircon cooling the battery, your i3 is at risk of exploding. Um, no! As the battery cell temperature increases, the output power of the cell is reduced by the battery management system to prevent a further temperature increase. i3 drivers in very hot climates have noticed that full output p...

Re: 2014 Yes or No...

Congrats on your i3! I also have a 2014 BEV that I've owned for a year and a half. In the beginning, I was worried about the health of my battery. Not now. There are some days that my GOM (Guess-O-Meter) will display 90 mile range in Eco Pro +. Not bad for almost 75k miles on the car and the fact t...

Re: Air conditioning failed

Update. Two weeks later and the AC went out again. This time making clicking noises (in the rear, where the compressor is located). Dealer said the compressor self-destructed, throwing metal fillings throughout the refrigerant lines, requiring all of the AC components to be replaced. Total repair e...
