Re: Welcome to the BMW i3 Forum

If you share the general area in which you plan to drive, those here on the forum may be able to offer further suggestions – ambient temperature and elevation changes challenge EVs more visibly than gas / Diesel vehicles. try to run a Diesel on short routes in a cold climate. Get's half the mpg as ...

Re: Corrosion - BMW i3

That Ocean spray salt probably explains the rusting. "The ocean air also contains salt and minerals. In fact, the ocean contains over 70 mineral nutrients and trace elements (this is one reason why swimming in the ocean is considered therapeutic to the body – so many minerals)." https://beachlifeexp...

Re: Corrosion - BMW i3

Maybe galvanic corrosion between the aluminum body and the metal bolts in the i3? The i3 doesn't have an aluminum body like our 2000 Honda Insight had. An i3's body is a CFRP passenger compartment with thermoplastic exterior panels, neither of which corrodes. Honda used specially coated single-use ...

Re: Corrosion - BMW i3

Every Metal will rust. Many cars in the Rustbelt will not make for 10 years without holes in the bodywork. Just would like to get some context here - in what kind of climate environments you guys are living? But I'm wondering about rusting bolts here, since they are anodized these days and that hold...

Re: Which versions of the AC compressor have people had failures with?

Variable Speed A/C is not only a game changer in cars but in residential. I went from a On/Off A/C unit to a Mini Split Inverter variable unit. Everything is variable on that thing. External Fan speed, Compressor Speed, Internal Fan speed. A nominal 12.000 BTU unit can regulate between 2500 and 1400...

Re: Edmunds TCO - Fact or Fiction?

If you don't have a catastrophic failure you will never spend $13k for an i3 in maintenance and repairs for 5 years. That must be for a regular ICE BMW - there I see no issue in loosing that much money since it's a BMW (Bring My Wallet) How many $23,000 repair bills at 5 years old (e.g., my i3) doe...

Re: Edmunds TCO - Fact or Fiction?

the i3 BEV 2 year service is like 400-500$ even with the 100 point inspection at the BMW Dealer.

I don't know about the REX oil change Service.

Re: Edmunds TCO - Fact or Fiction?

Looks like bogus to me. If you don't have a catastrophic failure you will never spend $13k for an i3 in maintenance and repairs for 5 years. That must be for a regular ICE BMW - there I see no issue in loosing that much money since it's a BMW (Bring My Wallet) If you exclude tires - you will have ha...

Re: Loads of Pictures.... incl Rex

I would NOT buy an EV without a frunk. It is amazing for picking up hot food! You can store it in the frunk while driving home and the cabin is not filled with strong Chinese food smells, greasy burgers and fries or any other take out that makes the inside of the car smell so bad. LOVE the frunk! I...

Re: i3 HV Battery Upgrade

Before I bought my i3 I thought “man, the Rex is awesome and is perfect for this kind of use” and after I bought my Rex-i3 I’m like “man, that Rex is dumb and I hate it because I’m constantly worried about whether I run it often enough to keep it from breaking and I really wish I could remove it.” ...
