Re: What's triggering this thermal protection when driving hard?

I think the limit is the inverter and motor. The newer batteries (42kWh in particular) should be able to provide more power. I say this based on the fact that BMW did not increase performance significantly when they doubled the battery size (minor increase for i3s). As a matter of fact they decrease...

Re: I3 REX 2015 125001,125002,125003 Misfire

Anyone who has these error codes should try this fix first:

You can buy the part for less than $10.

If that didn't work try fuel pump relay next.

Re: 2016 I3 REX Low Miles

I recommend paying a bit more for a 2018 rex or 2019 bev. But if that is all you can afford then it will be ok.

Re: REX drain plug rounded out

You can try a bolt extractor, auto part stores carry them. https://www.amazon.com/Olsa-Tools-Extractor-Clearance-Professional/dp/B08MVGXTRF/ref=sr_1_7_sspa?crid=UM5AJ2HGQX6L&keywords=bolt%2Bextractor&qid=1673895314&sprefix=bolt%2Bextracto%2Caps%2C172&sr=8-7-spons&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdG...

Re: Mazda brings back the REX with 372 miles range!

I actually prefer the i3 REX philosophy. The problem is that running it for long trips requires driver engagement. You need to watch the fuel gauge, watch the battery level, study what sort of terrain is ahead of you. It is like operating an airplane, too much for most people. I personally enjoy all...

Mazda brings back the REX with 372 miles range!

Pretty disappointing that they reduced battery size: https://insideevs.com/news/630894/2023-mazda-mx-30-phev-brings-back-rotary-engine-as-range-extender/ With FWD and small battery I don't think it can compete with the i3 REX. The rotary engine has 74 hp, so almost twice the i3 engine. It has a 13.2...

Re: REX is underrated!

I agree that fueling up every hour or so is not that bad. It is still much faster than charging a long range EV. You can practically fuel up in the time that it takes to start a charging session. The engine on 2017+ models is 38 hp (28 kW). Assuming 75% efficiency it can generate 21 kW electricity. ...

Re: REX is underrated!

On longer uphills sections you will lose battery charge even when hold state of charge is enabled. As mentioned I lost about 10% SOC climbing about 4,000 ft at Tejon pass, and I was doing 65-70 mph only. The i3 seats are comfortable for me, and the expansive driver space reduces fatigue, but the twi...

Re: REX is underrated!

Yes, I used adaptive cruise for the most part, particularly on day 1 with better weather. It reduces the stress on driver. I did not use it in heavy rain (you should not use adaptive cruise in heavy rain in general). It works very well for such a simple hardware. It did disengage on two occasions, s...
