Re: Resonant hum

Is the friction brake engaged only when the entire pack is full or with each individual full cell in the battery? The battery management system attempts to keep the charge levels of all cells close to equal at the high charge level end, so a full pack would also imply each cell being full. However,...

Re: Resonant hum

I have a 2017 i3 (no range extender), I just bought it, and I have noticed that when I am coming to a stop without braking, there is a loud resonant humming coming from the front end of the vehicle. However, it doesn't happen every time, and sometimes it is louder (really quite loud) than others. I...

Re: New i3s (with pics) now what winter wheels/tires?

The different suspension specs call for the different offset of the wheels . The engineering sets the pivot point of the front wheels in the center of the contact tread (described as scrub radius) . Using the correct offset wheels is the only recommended setup . While I agree with this, it seems th...

Re: Great Emergency Fuel Can

Anyone know about the safety of carrying gas in the Frunk? The frunk is in the front collision crumple zone, so in a front collision, gasoline could leak from the gasoline container. There are fewer ignition sources in the frunk than in an internal combustion engine compartment, but sparks could be...

Re: i3 rex runs for 10-15 mins then shuts down

A diagnostic trouble code (DTC) must be set when the REx engine shuts off prematurely. This would result in the warning message being displayed. Your dealer almost certainly would have read the DTC which should point to the problem. If you have an OBD reader (the BimmerLink smartphone app explains t...

Re: i3 LED Headlights

I recenty bought a certified i3, which has LED headlights and are NOT adaptive. The issue I found driving the first night was the LED lights are extremely pointed down?? If you would add a location to your user profile, we would know in which market your replacement i3 was sold. Different LED headl...

Re: Buying 2014 BMW i3

As the original owner of a 2014 i3 BEV, I would advise you to check the capacity of the battery pack. There have been many reports of significant capacity and thus range loss in early i3's. There's no direct way to measure the capacity, but the hidden service menu shows an estimate of the usable cap...

I was unaware of a relation between battery size and charging rate.
This timely article provides much more detail.

Re: End of production

For somebody who wants a cool EV, & they only want to (or can) spend up to $38k, 90% of people would pick the Tesla, no doubt. Maybe I choose cars for odd reasons, but I would never consider buying a Model 3 because of its size, weight, and body style. For those who want a compact hatchback EV, an ...

Re: Level 3 Charging

Because all i3's have the same maximum DC fast charging rate of 50 kW (usually ~45 kW in real world conditions), how much the battery cells are stressed depends on the battery pack size. As a result, DC fast charging is twice as stressful for a 60 Ah battery pack as for a 120 Ah battery pack. The ch...
