I understand charging rate slows down when it gets closer to full. Is this purposely done to protect the battery from damage? I noticed level 2 and 3 it gets to 80% plus super quick and trickle offs about 90%.

Correct as when the battery is approaching full, it is very important to not go over. This also reduces the charging heat generated so a little more can be put in the battery. Here is a charge graph including later enabling conditioning:
