I would love to have a electric tailgate to my i3. With a footsensor so you can swipe your foot under if you carry bags etc. Any ideas where to start? If i buy the right size of the struts and a sensor for the foot and last a control ship i would be ok right?

I think I also need some way to sense that the car is in park so the boot can't be opened when the car is in drive etc. Suggestions?

I found this info

Yeah seen that, the problem is to find struts in the right size that fits, and some control board for them since the bmw i3 does now have one orginal. Also good to know which "gear" is in. Don't want the car to open the tailgate on the road if the footsensor get a false reading.

I've been poking around and have not seen anyone tackle this as an aftermarket option yet. I don't need the foot activation. Would be just happy to have a power lift gate that goes up when I pop the hatch open with the remote or with the interior button.
Tesla Model 3 didn't have one from factory, but there's a very nice aftermarket kit for them. Pricey, but very nice: https://www.teslaoffer.com/product/model-3-power-liftgate-soft-closing/

Here, this one is for 2014-2021 i3 models. With or without foot sensor:
