Black kidney grill retrofit

Sun May 03, 2020 1:31 am

Does anyone know where I can find these grills off this orange bmw i3? I’m guessing they retrofit a front grill from another bmw. Anyone wanna take a guess? ;)

I'm guessing a one-off prototype that they decided not to manufacture, since it isn't on their web site for sale, but the other 'bits' on the car are, and have been available since 2014. And no one in the i3 community has posted anything like it.

But you might try contacting the company (it is in Japan), and ask.

I think you could probably take them to a good auto-body shop and have them painted, if you can't buy them. Once removed, they may not be all that hard to spray paint yourself.

I already plastidipped them. I want the grill with the lines. It must be retrofitted from another bmw model that’s why I’m asking the community which kidney grills best compare to the i3 kidney grill to get those lines.

the article that showcased this car back a couple years ago identified these as handmade by that designer, bmw never made them iirc. they were a one off piece.

FWIW, with no air flow INTO the 'engine compartment', adding the other bits would create a bit more drag, decreasing your range. Without a wind tunnel, can't say how much. The designers spent a lot of time worrying about how to save money and make the car slicker and to minimize weight to maximize range, that was reasonable for production costs. The CFRP bits were not intended for a large production run - other methods would have been better for the anticipated volume but in the process, they learned a lot about how to do things with that material and it is being used on other models.
