DIY ambilight

My car doesn't have the ambient lighting option so I wanted to play a little with fiber optics.
It actually looks better than in this photo.

That is pretty cool. Can you make it dimmer? It looks fun, but is it too bright whilst driving at night?

I can change the color and adjust brightness with my cell phone. And I have a switch to turn it off if needed.
It looks brighter in the photo than it actually is.

I find it very difficult to capture the correct shade on a photo. This is closer but the actual light is sharper and deeper blue.



Or would this be a better Christmas lighting?

There are similar kits for sale on ebay, aliexpress and amazon.
I bought one like this but it also included separate leds to illuminate the footwells. For doorpockets, I combined a light source of this kit with a clear plastic piece (original BMW part) that distributes the light inside the pocket.
