Yes, it works! It is not easy, but I'm sure I will get it after some practice.
It is really different from drifting with other cars because it is hard to be enough sensitive with the accelerator to avoid over-reving the engine (which shuts down the engine and you get an error message).

I don't want to post the answer in public because I'm afraid BMW will kill the feature as they did it with some other things when it got public...
 
Why - probably because it is fun and develops car-control skills. This kind of practice in a big parking lot in the snow is relatively safe and could help you in emergency situations in the future.

Looks like Austria has good snow this year! Interestingly, one of our current cars, a Mini Countryman ALL4 was built in Graz, Austria. A great snow vehicle!
 
Here is my new video. Now I am much more able to control the car in the drift. It seems to be just a thing of practice. It's a pity not to have more snow this year :(
