Hi all

Concerned I might have ordered the wrong colour I went looking for the Arravani grey in some of the photos which have emerged of actual production vehicles rather than the Frankfurt show images.

This image I think contains

Right at the back/left an Andesit silver. Next to it an Arravani grey, you can only see the rear 1/4 but I'm sure it is this colour. Next to that Solar Orange. Then central surrounded by people is Ionic Silver. To the right of that and in front of it with a bald guy looking in the right hand side are 2 x Laurus Greys. The last one at the far right of the frame is the one I'm not sure about, I'm leaning to it being a 3rd in Laurus Grey. Anyone agree/disagree.

Regards

Bill

As it happens I took a test drive in a Laurus Grey Rex today and snapped a few pictures.

This is the side view. There is a difference between the black bonnet [tr. hood] and the bodywork but it's very slight. It's likely the colour I'm going to take because it minimises the two-tone effect. It looks great it the flesh.

This second image, above, shows how the ambient lighting (at the front of the car) make the colour look much lighter than the rest of the car. Perhaps this is causing such diverse images of the various grey options that we're seeing.

In summary, the Laurus Grey is really dark and IMHO not too far from black. It's certainly close enough for me.

PS Interestingly, the Ionic silver (behind) is much more blue than I would have thought.

Roger sent me some photos of his in Arravani Grey, and asked me to share here. I blobbed out the reg, which is what I normally do when posting pictures of vehicles. Thanks so much to Roger for these and congratulations on the i3.

I managed to see and photograph both greys today both at dealers in South UK.

I don't know if anyone is as interested (obsessed!? LOL) in this as me but this album contains 2 photos taken from similar positions of the Arravani and Laurus grey paint schemes, both taken today with the same camera. I was particularly interested in the Arravani Grey as it is the colour I ordered and my expectations were slightly shaken when I saw the Frankfurt motor show pics.

With exposure compensation it is possible to make both colours look distinctly lighter than they appear to the eye (+ve exp. comp) and darker than they appear to the eye (-ve exp. comp) which I think explains some of the photos. The reality is that they are much much closer to one another than some photos have indicated. One dealer had the colour panel samples close by (I also have a photo of them) and I had to hold both grey panels up to the car to confirm which colour option the Laurus car was finished in. Side by side it would be easy but they were at different dealers. I prefer the Arravani because I don't like the brown tone that can come through in the Laurus, so I'm more than happy with my order. But I would have preferred gloss black to match the bonnet!

Tom if you are reading please feel free to grab these photos for your colour blog if they add anything. I have plenty more from other angles of both cars; if those would be useful fire me a PM.

Cheers all

Bill

Top job Bill. The Frankfurt arravani pics under the exhibition hall lighting are quite misleading IMO but I only personally realised that when I saw the colour samples at the dealer. If it's ok I'd be interested in seeing your other pics so I'll send you a PM with my email address.

I've added the best photos to my photobucket account, and divided the i3 album into 3 sub-albums, one for each of the colours and one containing side by side photos of the colour panels.

Root album is here.

Very useful indeed. Thanks for posting.

The color choices are the one thing that BMW seems not to have thought through very well in an otherwise very carefully engineered and designed car. :)

Excellent work Bill!

Purely for my own interest I made a couple of photoshops from the Arravani photos and made it into an all black with silver/grey accents scheme. They're in a new folder of the above photobucket link if anyone is interested - they were done quick and I'm not that handy with this aspect of photoshop so excuse some of the dodgy edges.

I thought it was unfair that only Capparis white i3's could qualify for "Stormtrooper" edition.
So I found this :
