Why glass?

Just wondering, why did BMW decide to make the rear hatch all glass? It's cool looking but I'm sure making the turn signals plastic as well as the hatch would be lower weight. Besides the fact that it's a pretty vulnerable area for damage. Just wondering...
 
No one outside of BMW knows for certain.

For the reasons that you wrote, I agree that using glass was a poor decision, especially because its breakage requires a complete replacement of the entire hatch.
 
It happened to me: a little impact (probably particularly unfortunate) that would have cause an small scratch on plastic or metal has made the hatch explode, literally. Total nonsense.
