Hello

My trip distance from my i3 is very short 100km. Can I replace 33kwh to 42kwh by means of the battery and thus increase the trip distance.

Gr Jos

First, if your i3 has a 33 kWh (94 Ah) battery pack, 100 km actual range is so low that your battery pack has likely lost more than 30% of its usable capacity which would qualify you for a new battery pack at no cost under warranty.

I don't recall every reading of a 94 Ah battery pack losing so much usable capacity which makes me wonder whether your i3 actually has a 60 Ah battery pack which is much more likely to lose usable capacity. What year is your i3?

The battery pack in any 60 Ah or 94 Ah i3 can be replaced by a larger capacity battery pack (e.g., 120 Ah). However, BMW dealers won't perform this upgrade, and only a few independent mechanics will do this. If you're lucky to live near the Czech Republic, an independent mechanic there performs these upgrades. Send a message to [email protected].

I agree 100km seems too low. My 2017 gets 3.9kwh when on the highway 65mph with A/C on, my normal city driving with no hvac I am getting 6.1kwh. With let’s say 28kwh usable capacity the would be 109 miles to 170 miles. It would seem odd for yours to only get 62 miles.

Sorry for the late response.
my bmw i3 is from 2015
Can I replace it myself i’m pretty handy myself
But I'll check with the dealer first if the battery is broken

Replacing the battery pack would be challenging. It weighs a few hundred pounds. It contains refrigerant lines, so the refrigerant would need to be removed and then replaced after the replacement. The replacement battery pack would need to be registered with the car. I don't know what that entails. There are slight physical differences between 60 Ah, 94 Ah, and 120 Ah battery packs that would need to be resolved.

An independent i3 mechanic in the Czech Republic has figured out how to do this and offers upgrades, but there don't seem to be many mechanics offering upgrades.

You don't have a 33kWh battery, you have the 22kWh battery.
Your 100km range is about 62 miles which is still not bad for that size battery.
