Having just ordered a new i3 without speccing the advanced Bluetooth option, I wondered if anyone could confirm that it's possible to charge an iPhone with the standard USB port? It had not occurred to me that this might be an issue but have read a couple of things to suggest it shouldn't be used for charging "an external device".
 
I charge my iPhone6 via a lightning cable plugged into the USB port in the center console every day, and I have the base-est, lowest spec of all i3 models. (2014 w/only heated seats as an option).
