    Solar charging

@waitingi3 What if you don`t invest into an extension of your array yourself but become a customer of SolarCity. AFAIK SolarCity would be the owner then, you pay them a monthly fee for using the power produced. So those would be technically and legally two different arrays. Wouldn`t that...

    Solar charging

I solved the problem for myself by installing 30 kW in May ;-) Prices are much lower here in Germany, I paid 1143 €/kW / 1257$/kW. With 30 kW, even a cloudy sky will deliver enough power for charging. Charging the i3 directly with solar is awkward, to say the least. You can`t charge with...

Trade in value after 3 years

Just traded in my May 14 REx for a new 94 Ah BEV, delivery expected September, here in Germany. My trade in price is 27.000 € / 30.000$. I only have to pay 7.000 € for the new BEV. Think I made a good deal here. First when I asked my dealer they felt unable to make an offer for trade in...

    Now the waiting begins

Here in Germany 11 kW, 400V ( 3x230V, 16A ). Expect my new BEV in September. I drive a REx since 5/14. Frank

    Now the waiting begins

Deliveries of 2017 i3 with 94 Ah cells have started here in Germany. Several have been reported on the street. Frank

    Heads are turning

I`ve had my REx for over 2 years now, and still a lot of people have a closer look at it on the car park of my supermarket for example. I like to share some information because I believe that electric cars are an important step towards a cleaner future. Even invite people for a short test drive...

Make the i3 battery an emergency home power source

I have been thinking about that a lot. Would love to have an emergency power supply. With only 300 - 500W I could run heating ( have a wood pellet heating which needs 300W for 12 minutes to start, then only 40W to run continuously ), fridge, LED lighting, PC, TV. Enough to get through a longer...

More details on the 2017 i3

In Germany, the price for the 94 Ah BEV and REx is 1.200 € higher than the old 60 Ah - less than we expected. 1.200 € is 1.390 $ as of today. Frank

More details on the 2017 i3

We get plenty of inconsistencies here too. Press release as of today states useable capacity 29 kWh. But then, technical data 27,2 kWh: https://www.press.bmwgroup.com/deutschland/article/detail/T0259598DE/technische-daten-bmw-i3-94ah-gueltig-ab-07/2016 Scroll down, click "Technische Daten BMW...

More details on the 2017 i3

We have different information here in Germany - official BMW statement. 94 Ah BEV weighs 50kg more than the 60 Ah BEV. However, this is not only because of the heavier battery. The new models include DC charging and 3 phase 11 kW charging, which also add some weight. Useable capacity...

    Question on battery capacity

Probably a software issue. Several owners in Germany reported that after a software update suddenly max capa was much lower. My max capa ( may 2014 REx, 15.000 miles ) has never been below 19.0 kWh even in winter. Highest ever was 19.9, and I saw 19.8 when I looked 7th october. Frank

    Nissans 60kW battery pack: details

60kWh vs. 21.6 for me would be a real world range of 250-300 miles in the summer, 175-225 in the winter. Want that! Frank

So good i'm thinking of leasing a second i3...

Still unconfirmed speculation, but we expect MY 2016 to get a battery with 56.7% more capacity. And BEV has an extra 6% more range because of lower weight. So 2016 BEV could have 66% more electric range than 2015 REx, which for me would mean to buy a BEV next time instead of a REx. Frank

So good i'm thinking of leasing a second i3...

As you already have a REx, a BEV will do as a second car. Which comes at a lower price and ist even more efficient due to the lower weight. Frank

BMW i talks about larger EV, increased i3 range in 2016

I expect BMW will offer the new larger battery from early 2016, as until 31st Dec. there is a discount for the present model in Germany. The new Samsung 94 Ah cells raise capacity and range by 56%, which is quite some leap. Those cells AFAIK have exactly the same dimensions as the old 60 Ah...
