    Range for speed

Correction! BMWi3owner gave a power consumption at steady 120 kph. That's 75mph. An 18.8 kWhr battery would give a range of 62 miles at 75 mph under those conditions. Stevei3 gave a power consumption at a steady 65 mph. An 18.8 kWhr battery would give 73 miles at 65 mph in those conditions...

    Sound system

Ultra, My impression that power of sound systems are measured by what goes to the speakers, but in this context it's the power taken by the entire system that matters. Did you measure power to the audio system as a whole or just to the speakers? NuEcar

    Efficiency of Regenerative braking

Does anyone know this? How much of the kinetic energy in a moving car gets converted into energy stored in the battery? Is this maximized at maximum regeneration - slowing the car as quickly as possible without using conventional brakes. Similarly how efficient is the power-train? How much...

My i3's Active Cruise Control in action

It seemed as if the driving assistant left more room than most would at such speeds. Does that become annoying on roads with multiple lanes due to others continually moving into the gap from the neighbouring lane?

    Range for speed

BMWi3owner, you gave the power consumption at 120 kmph at 22.7 kWhr. The usable capacity of the battery (thanks very much agj) is 18.8 kWhrs. Thus the car could be operated for 18.8/22.7 hrs in the conditions of your test. 0.83 hrs at 120 kmph gives 99.38 km, which I rounded to 100 km. Yes...

    Range for speed

Thanks BMWi3owner, the power used at 100km/hr is what I've been looking for. Using the the given battery capacity of 18.8 kWhr gives a range of 100 km as you say. Is 18.8 kWhrs the absolute capacity of the battery? I believe the car shuts down before the battery is completely drained, and...

    Your first few 100 kilomters?

BoMW, Several misconceptions. I don't need 300 miles of range. I would accept 70 miles of range, if that could be done with uninhibited driving including speeds of 75 mph in mild weather. I might accept that range as low as 60 miles. Somewhere between 60 and 70 miles is my threshold for...

    Blog about your i3 experience

Andy, thanks for the blog, and especially for your postscript regarding range. I'm in California where the Rex is a non-starter for several reasons. My city is spread out, with some mesas and canyons (neither the Fens nor Cornwall) and laced with freeways. I drive reasonably aggressively but...

    Your first few 100 kilomters?

Thanks Ken and I3me. The Rex is a non-starter in the US as far as I am concerned - regulations have forced BMW to ensure the Rex can't be employed until the battery is almost exhausted. Everyone in the US will have the experience of the Daily Telegraph journalist - lousy performance when the...

    Your first few 100 kilomters?

i3me, thanks for both accounts of your trips. Together they give a good idea of the maximum range anyone might expect to get from the i3. I could see myself accepting the discomfort and limits on acceleration and speed a few times a year, but no more often. I live in San Diego, California...

i3 EV Range Inadequate for US cities, Rex Thwarted

My girlfriend accuses me of not wanted to leave my postcode, so I'm the poster boy for an urban car. My average annual mileage is 8K. I calculate my daily average is only 24 miles - I fly out of town a lot. But 20 miles is a short trip within San Diego city, which must be 60 miles or more...

I am probably going to pass on the i3...

i3me and ecoangel, those estimates of range are a disappointment to me. I was hoping for 80 miles when driven fairly aggressively. I live in San Diego which is not hilly, but there mesa and canyons, and I'll be living on a steep hill. Currently I drive 8 000 miles a year, which works out at...
