Potential Buyer with a few simple questions :)

Hello, I'm seriously considering an I3 as my next car purchase and just had a few questions about the car and ownership, and what better people to ask than current owners :). I'd be looking at getting a fairly used REX at about the £10-12k price point So in no particular order 1) What sort of...

Do you have a Wallbox charger at home, or why not?

Since we’re a mixed EV household (Tesla Model X, VW ID.4 and 2017 REx). Yes our garage is actually used for cars. We opted for Tesla HPWC’s and Tesla Taps. Generally only 1 or 2 EVs needs juice at the same time. I sure like the new Tesla Universal HPWC, although removing and replacing the...

REx vs mountain - learning experience

First thing I did was code my 2015 Panda REx as a trip from AR to WA was going to require lots of planning. If we couldn’t activate HSOC, I wouldn’t be buying an i3. With that said I wanted to see what worse case scenario was like over Snoqualmie Pass at 6.5% SOC. It wasn’t pretty, going up...

WTB: 110V BMW OEM L1 EVSE

That’s what it was, 12A vs 10A. I knew there was a difference between the two. I have not seen an 8A out there, but will keep my eyes open. Might sound minimal, but every AMP helps when there’s no L2 available.

WTB: 110V BMW OEM L1 EVSE

My understanding was 2014-2018 was version 1 (16A?) and 2019+ was updated version with lower Amps? Never seen a 8A model, wow that’s not even 1.0kW, take 6 weeks to charge my 205kWh Hummer, LOL.

WTB: 110V BMW OEM L1 EVSE

Anyone have one sitting around? Mine died, gen1 is preferred as it has higher amp output as i recall. Send me a PM

Tire Replacement Choices Other than Bridgestone

When looking for tires for an EV, make sure they have an XL (Extra Load) rating. Due to the weight of battery pack it's highly recommended to get this rating. Unfortunately in the US, they really only leaves us one option, Bridgestone Ecopias. The 19's are cheaper than 20's if that helps.

The pains of finding wiper blades for the i3.

Needed some new blades for my 2017 Panda with ACC. Recalling reading this thread with all the confusion of 28” vs 28.5”… So I decided not to mess around and get OEM. These are probably in stock at your local BMW dealer for $73.57. Rear blade retails for about $16 Here’s my favorite OEM...

    No level 3 charging

Mission accomplished, new part is in. Now J-1772 handle locks on L2 (when doors lock) and takes a DCFC. big relief. The security screws to get the part out are very difficult, in fact they pissed me off so bad I replaced them with something much easier to service. I watched step by step...

    Can not select “park”

I ran into all sorts of issues with my 12V on my (sold) 2015 REx. From what I have read, the longer the car sits with a dead 12V the more difficult it is to clear the DCT’s. I had a 36 hour battle with a 12V, what ended up fixing my issue was BimmerLink. I was able to clear all the errors...

    No level 3 charging

Appreciate everyone’s advice on this topic, this website had been invaluable to an i3 owner. After plenty of WD-40, I cannot get the charge pin lock to work, won’t even lock on L2. After some research, I decided to take the project on myself. My local BMW dealer has the part in stock, BMW...

    No level 3 charging

I tried this today, plugged in J-1772, started charging (flashing blue)… Locked car with remote. I could hear something in the charge port area for 2 seconds, sounds like the pin trying to lock down. Cycled that a few times. When the car is locked, and it’s flashing blue (charging) I am able...

    Buying advice - 2014 or 2019

To REx or Not REx, that is the question.. I’ve had two of them, and when I need to make a 150mi (one way trip) I never have to worry about a L3 charger being full. I just keep rolling and fill ‘er up.

    No level 3 charging

I got some WD-40 today and sprayed lock pin area (right above the J-1772 connection). Went to EA, same thing yellow light flashed, then got error on screen, flashed white. I suspect it’s the locking pin as you described. Probably not going to be a cheap BMW repair. At least I have L2 and a...

    No level 3 charging

I’ll try the WD-40 trick. Does it not use the same lock for L2 charging? When the car is locked and charging on L2, the charging handle is locked. This is by design so people cannot unplug a charging car. Curious if this was a sign my locking pin was still functional.

    No level 3 charging

Having the same issue with my 2017 with 66k, won’t DCFC. Just started last week. Was the repair expensive?

12V battery step by step and preventing errors

I’ve replaced 12V batteries in both my 2015 & 2017. When I replaced 2015, it was a 36hour battle! 2017 took me an hour after charged up. Last Friday by 2017 gave me a drivetrain error, I knew it was the 12V. Fortunately it was parked in the garage and I have another car. I didn’t have time...

REX Aux Fan damaged in accident

Is the vehicle getting repaired and covered by insurance? If so let the shop diagnose and repair all that when they fix the liftgate.

It’s a cash cow the bad tire scam

This is interesting. On my 2017 with 20” Ecopia’s the right rear (pass side) is also wearing like a mofo, and the L Rear still has decent tread. I am also going to push the limits on these rears. Right now the rears have 26k, which I understand is A LOT for i3 tires. Best price I can...
