Battery degradation driven by aging, charge cycles and charge current

Cold is often ignored, but is much worse than high heat for battery degradation, however it is easy to heat a battery. The i3 will heat the battery when necessary and plugged in, so will most EVs. PHEVs can minimize battery use when the battery is too cold. It is a good reason to leave your EV...

I3 seats causing back pain ?

Seats are highly personal, I like my i3 Tera fine, didn't bug me at all driving 2000 miles in 4 days. I have a tall torso and a bad lower back. They have never bugged me at all. The only thing I don't like about them is they are a bit flimsy and bouncy.

6 Months And I’m Going to Sell it

I agree, sounds like the car really isn't for the OP. I disagree with almost all the points though. Great visibility, high beams are fine, much more pleasing color quality than the low beam LED, though they do clash, it is really a 3 door car with access doors so comes along with features you...

Disabling parking distance sensor for bike rack using some tapes?

I too find the parking sensors highly annoying with a bike rack. They are so loud and stay on even while moving forward for far too long (speed they shut off is too fast for my parking lot). I have no parking button that I am aware of. I would be glad to know if there is an easy way to disable...

A Bolt owner has i3 regrets sometimes

I used my i3 REx to drive to Minneapolis from Cedar Rapids at 75 mph, a drive of about 278 miles. Also check that route and see how many CCS are along it. Hint, it's zero until you get to Minneapolis. I do this type of drive frequently enough that the Bolt EV wouldn't be usable for me. Until...

2015 i3 Hold SOC charge not what it seems?

To add to my earlier comment, was there strong winds or anything? If I just drive on the REx I usually get 30 to 40 mpg, so two gallons from the tank is about 60 to 80 miles plus electric. However, I have seen as bad as 22 mpg or so, driving 72 mph into a 20 to 30 mph headwind. That drained...

2015 i3 Hold SOC charge not what it seems?

Either something is wrong or there is crucial information missing. Starting elevation about the same as ending? Did you start with a full tank? Any strong gas smell? In my 2015 REx, I can drive about 200 miles on a full charge and 2 full tanks of gas (2.2 gal each, so 4.4 total) at 75 mph...

2019 BMW i3 REx will have a larger tank?

My guess is they won't want to change fuel tank parts and will leave it alone. However, BEVx would let them increase the size maybe 1 gallon to keep range just under EV range, but I highly doubt it.

California Used i3 Prices Coming Down Soon? HOV Lanes / New Rules 2019

They are ridiculously low already, so low people are buying them internationally and exporting them from the US. I expect some stabilization.

Buying out of state - a cautionary tale

Depending on your state your local Treasurer/DMV might issue a temporary permit. Call and ask. Make sure to talk to someone higher up.

    REX fuel consumption per kWh

I am not arguing that the i3 is a great long distance car, the sizing of the REx and tank are not suitable as you point out. What I am saying is for a range extender operating as designed with hold mode enabled (not US handicapping of the Rex so BMW can get additional ZEV credits) the car does...

    REX fuel consumption per kWh

For maintenance, it was clearly designed to have most of the miles on electric, but it was designed to run continuously on gas (i.e., the engine can handle the load). I have put about 3,000 miles on the Rex, it doesn't overheat or anything as something designed only as an emergency range...

    REX fuel consumption per kWh

The Rex is designed for continuous operation. It has adequate cooling and lubrication.

    REX fuel consumption per kWh

I find it interesting it can use the power electronics coolant loop to cool the engine coolant. Isn't that the AC? Still surprised they don't have a cabin heater tied into the engine loop. That is a great engine guide. Love design notes like that.

    REX fuel consumption per kWh

This might not be possible to figure easily as if you are driving I would guess the electricity would power the traction motor directly to bypass the round trip losses to the battery. I would guess the Rex generates a certain amount of power, the traction motor uses that. Any surplus ends up in...

    100Kwh i3 battery...

Tesla already has a long distance capable network of chargers. The Model 3 Long Range can recharge 170 miles in less than 30 mins, enough to get more than 2 hours driving. I think people are actually getting around 150 miles in 20 mins. Using one of the calculators (EV Trip Planner), I could...

I3 Rex Auxiliary power and 8000 Feet Elevation

I can't wait to get a Tesla or other long range BEV and drive it on mountain passes. Air density, and power, drop about 3%/1000 feet elevation above sea level. Normally aspirated engines can use lower octane fuel at high elevations. Why they sell 85 octane. Turbos or supercharged vehicles...

    Always charge to 100%?

I have a similarly short commute and only charge a few days a week at work, typicallywhen it gets to half. Come winter I will leave it plugged in at work to condition battery with a departure time. BEV I would keep plugged in so it was always ready, my REx I just use gas every now and then...

    Inaccurate speed reading

In any driving dynamics a car can drive a GPS will have far more accurate speed than anything else. If you need more precise than GPS (fraction of mph), then you need an inertial measurement unit that combines accelerometer data. GPS speed calculation is not calculated the same as position. It...

steering Wheel became Hard to turn

The steering is electric assist, which uses a steering sensor and an electric motor to help turn the wheels. My hunch is a software glitch reading from the sensor or controlling the motor or an issue with actual sensor or motor, more likely sensor. I have seen it once in 6500 miles as well...
