Where to tap into electrical near mirror? And how?

I want to permanently install my radar detector? Where and how can I tap into the power grid near the rear view mirror? All help appreciated.

Just pop open the roof function center trim cover - you should be able to find a power source to tap into in there:

Google F30 or F10 radar detector hardwiring, nearly all BMW's are the same. If I recall correctly, I think green is power and brown is ground. The connecter looked identical to my 2003 e46 330i. Google to confirm those wires, usually bright colors are power on BMW's and dark colors are ground. Didn't take me much time at all to do the job, I used the blend mount from my e46 too.

Any advice on popping the cover? I don't want to ham-hand it and break off a tab.

Unfortunately it is cheap soft plastic, easy to marr. I used a small screw driver in the inner seam and pried the two pieces apart.
