Re: Battery Replacement Under Warranty

Mason - Keep us posted on putting together a group that can lobby BMW to honor their warranty. I received the same response from our local dealer saying we would have to pay over $400 to do the diagnostic. They are tight lipped on how they the assessment of 70% battery capacity will be determined.

Thanks!

Ours has been parked for a few months thanks to covid and our displayed range has dropped from 81 miles to 67 miles. How can I check the max battery capacity? thanks in advance. David

If you have literally not driven your i3 in a few months, its 12 V battery might be so discharged that it would not boot the controllers necessary to enter drive readiness state. Unlocking then locking the doors either in person or remotely would fire up the DC-DC converter to charge the 12 V battery for at least 30 minutes. I do this at least weekly to prevent the 12 V battery from discharging too much. Leaving an EVSE plugged in won't charge the 12 V battery after the battery pack has reached full charge.

The Batt. Kapa. max value in the hidden service menu is a calculation of the usable battery pack capacity. However, the calculation can vary quite a bit, so it's not as accurate as measuring the energy produced during a slow discharge from full to empty or the energy required to fully charge the battery pack from empty. Search for how to access the hidden service menu.

Thanks for the info on keeping the 12v charged. I've been driving the i3 for the last few days and have been leaving it plugged in so hopefully the 12v is now recharged.

Hi. I have a 2015 i3 and in the service menu my battery is at 13.7 or less when I check. Do you guys think I should take it to the dealer or since it is still around 72% (13.7/18.8) they won't do anything and I'll be wasting money on them checking?

malikadnanm, when you say 'wasting money,' are you implying that your vehicle is no longer under warranty (general vehicle warranty or battery warranty)? If it's no longer under the general vehicle warranty, personally I would wait a little while. If it doesn't test below 70%, you would likely be on the hook for the cost of the test and possibly the cost of upgrading the car's software, if they had to update it in order to run the test (per reports earlier in this thread).

Thanks for the reply. Yeah I am out of my regular warranty now. I guess I should wait till it’s like 12kwh in the service menu before taking it in? I’m getting like 55 miles on a charge now driving pretty conservatively during ideal weather too.

We're basically in the same boat, and yeah, I'll be waiting until the max kappa value is consistently well below the warranty threshold, so as not to risk having to pay for the next capacity test. I'm currently documenting the value once a week, after an overnight charge, since it does fluctuate a bit.

HI my max kappa value is currently is showing 13. my I3 is a 2015 model. Do you think BMW will honor the warranty just based on the kappa value alone. So far on a good day, the max mileage on a full battery is 55 miles.
