BMW Connected drive 3G to 4G?

Both. You’ll be able to configure it to auto-connect to your Wi-Fi when available and use the cell data connection when not. It’s using an iot sim and your cost per month will only be like $2 since it uses almost no actual bandwidth. The messages it needs to pass are relatively tiny and not...

BMW Connected drive 3G to 4G?

So, @AgentiMi is plugging away along with a few others on a replacement telematics box that should allow for getting these remote services back in an i3. Still a little ways out, but will be fully open source (the hardware and the software) and the hardware won’t be much more than a used...

    I had a 3G to 4G TCU upgrade to prove a point.

I don’t mean to put words in someone else’s mouth, but he does say “under BMW warranty”, so I think it’s safe to assume he didn’t pay for it and doesn’t know what they would have charged, either. Sounds like he has a 2017 with an extended or CPO warranty, so they had no choice but to do it for...

    I had a 3G to 4G TCU upgrade to prove a point.

Nah, trust me, it can be done cheaply enough. There are IoT applications like this already that don’t take much monthly data so the cost for the SIM is really low. Covering the cloud services charge is also low, and it SEEMS like AgentMi isn’t trying to make money on this side of it, either...

    I had a 3G to 4G TCU upgrade to prove a point.

Well, I don’t think it’s been posted here, but AgentMi, the guy who has posted here in the past about a potential battery upgrade solution for us, is working on a TCU. Says hardware goes to production in a week or two that would give us wifi and cell connectivity in a new piggyback TCU (so you...

    I had a 3G to 4G TCU upgrade to prove a point.

What we really need is someone to do the CAN bus hacking necessary to be able to lock/unlock and acclimatize from a 3rd party device. Then there’d be nothing stopping someone from creating a fairly cheap box that could do this with a 3rd party app and a device to talk to it. That could be an MMI...

BMW Connected drive 3G to 4G?

As of now, no support for remote functions like lock/unlock or pre-acclimatize. If it starts to do those things, then it becomes very interesting for those of us getting sunset. —Donnie

Software update needed for HV battery capacity check

If the buffers are indeed that small then it would seem to me that they must be unlocking nearly all or all of it to get some of these capacities back within warranty specs, though, no? And if they’re using it all, well, it would further seem fairly easy to “prove” assuming it does actually...

Software update needed for HV battery capacity check

If I’m understanding Art’s post correctly, my 80% number is wrong, but it still sounds like the overall theory is correct. And I had no idea there was head and tail buffers, but I don’t think that changes the actual problem, either. So it’s some larger percentage and it’s sort of in the middle...

Software update needed for HV battery capacity check

You are badly missing a key distinction: the i3, when charged to “100%” on your dash, is only charged to 80% of the capacity of the pack as built. It won’t ever use that upper 20%, no way, no how. That’s by *design*. So yes, you are correct, that charging an i3 to 100% is *fine*. It’s charging...

Software update needed for HV battery capacity check

Because that’s how this particular battery technology works. It’s why Tesla recommends NOT charging past 80% unless you NEED to. It’s why you’re not supposed to charge a Tesla from 80->100% in that case until *right* before you leave if you’re gonna do it. You can ignore both of these...

Software update needed for HV battery capacity check

I hear you and I agree that it’s quite the shenanigan to pull, but I’m not sure it’s as clear cut to *prove* in a court of law as you make it seem. —Donnie

Software update needed for HV battery capacity check

These cars, from the factory, only utilized 80% of the *actual* battery capacity. This was by design because they wanted to maximize battery life. Had they let it use 100% we would have all gotten way more range, but the batteries wouldn’t have lasted nearly as many years. But many aren’t making...

Replacing Freon after HV battery swap

So other than handling the AC system and doing the physical swap, what else had to be done to make it work? —Donnie

Software update needed for HV battery capacity check

For the guy who said they wanted to do an EME replacement first, that sounds like what Fiat is doing on owners with failing battery packs on 500e’s. They’re claiming the inverter is bad, not covered under warranty, and for $7k you can get that replaced and THEN they’ll be able to tell *if* the...
