Bridgestone Front tyres/tires - Unusual stress fault

I am seeing a fine cracking on the outside tread of the front tyres. The cracks are in the outer tread blocks and comprise numerous fine lines. I feel sure this reflects the tall nature of the tyres combined with a narrow contact patch. Seems that the cornering forces are causing the outer...

Engine Mount Bolt Shear Failure - info urgently required...

I had the mounting bolt fail three times on my I3 and then a final time after I had sold the car back to BMW. This was immediately after the car came back after a repair to the range extender (REX) that required the REX to be removed. No guesses as to root cause - most likely this happened...

    True power consumption

Correct on location guess. I am based in the UK. I have carried out the range tests by measuring the KwH required to return the battery back to 100% charge My miles per kwh calculation is based on the following: 1) Miles per kwh as reported in the BMW app 2) Kwh required to get back to 100%/...

    True power consumption

I have an I3 REX in its 4th year with 42,000 miles of which 32,000 electric The computer dash tell me that I get 3.8 miles to the Kwh. If i look at actual Kwh required to restore the range (increase in reported range/kwh) back to 100% I get 3.4 miles to the Kwh and if I look at actual miles...

    Engine mount broken

I am pleased to report that the engine mount problem appears to have been sorted by BMW some time ago. I had three breakages at some 3,000 mile intervals but the last fix involved I believe both a part & engine control software update. I have now done 40,000 miles with no further problems. I...

    Round Trip Charging Efficiency

It would be useful for other i3 drivers to post the results of a similar test together with electric miles recorded and the type of charger used to see if the round trip charging efficiency does reduce and also the variation. I looked at this issue as the overall kwh consumption for the place...

    Round Trip Charging Efficiency

I have a REX that has now over 30,000 miles of which 26,000 are electric. Recently I compared the kwh to return the car to 100% charge as against the kwh used derived from the trip computer - trip miles divided by miles per kwh. On the this comparison I obtained just 74% efficiency , i.e...

    Engine mount broken

11,500 miles matches the failure rate (number of times & mileage) with my I3. This is clearly a difficult problem to fix without detuning the car in which case the advertised 0-60 times would not be achievable. That being said I am now using Eco Plus routinely which significantly moderates the...

    Engine mount broken

I believe that using traction control is what BMW is working on. The issue is how quickly the wheel speeds up even with a slight lift off the ground. Currently traction control can not respond in time. Faster computer required?

    Engine mount broken

It the high torque from the electric motor that is the cause. So yes EV is the reason along with design of a drive train that did not take this into account.

    Engine mount broken

I gather the issue is recognised by BMW. When a rear wheel leaves the road it spins up very quickly. When the tyre returns to earth there is a shock load to the drive train and the weakest link breaks, i.e. the engine mounting bolt. Strengthening the bolt will just relocate the problem so not...

    Engine mount broken

Ugh, broken again for 3rd time after just 1,500 miles. So failure at 4,000, 8,500 & 10,000 miles. Is there a fix?

    Engine mount broken

When the fault happened I just noticed a knocking noise from the rear right that I could create by full acceleration & lifting off. If I was gentle on the throttle I could drive the car without any noise. No faults were reported by the I3.

Ecotricity medium charger Ikea croydon issue?

All I would say is that choosing between three charge rates is functionality provided by BMW within the I3 settings and presumably they had a reason for this? I guess the "should never be a reason " in your post is more like "sometimes there might be a reason"?

    Engine mount broken

I believe that is the bolt that is breaking not the mount as such? I assume that it is a big job to fix as the broken end has to be removed from where it locates in the motor - this is the generator not the electric motor. Is it just the REX that is suffering from this failure? The other...

    Engine mount broken

Don't lose out on the fun factor. Change the bolt not your use of the go pedal! Every 3,000 miles?

Ecotricity medium charger Ikea croydon issue?

Deep in the I3 settings you can reduce the charge rate required at the charger

Anyone else having a lot of issues?

Re the rattle from rear RH. See post re broken bolt. Check your RH mounting bolt still present. Easy to see if you look just above rear wheel. There should be the head of a bolt not a hole in the chassis. Look on LH rear to see how it should look.

    Engine mount broken

My I3 has just under 9,000 miles and this bolt has broken twice - once at just over 4,000 miles and again at just over 8,000. I have agreed with my BMW service garage that I will take the car in for a "lifing" bolt change at another 3,000 miles. It is much easier to change the mounting bolt...
