BMW/Bosch introduce a cheaper CCS Combo charger

I must be missing something here... The BMW i3 has about 18Kwh of usable energy. This is a 24Kw DC fast charger. 80% of 18Kwh is 14.4Kwh. 30 Minutes of charging at 24Kw is 12Kwhr of power assuming no losses or charging taper at all. How does that equal 80% in 1/2 hr????

Optimum speed using Rex for very long journey

I mostly agree with you... Since you are primarily focusing the environmental impact, you do need to factor in the additional impact of the gas, oil in the hybrid system... They are not trivial... In my case I think that the Model S probably has a lower over all carbon foot print that the i3...

Optimum speed using Rex for very long journey

Of course once the Rex kicks in, the tesla kind of kills it in efficiency for the next 150 miles or so....

    Tesla Superchargers Availability for i3

It is possible for the i3 that is equipped with the SAE Combo fast charging port to work with a Tesla SuperCharger with an adapter. The two extra big pins on the combo port are for DC charging. Both the Tesla Supercharger and SAE Combo are base on the extended J1775 standard. In fact the...

No Sunroof in the US: Confirmed

Thanks... The Thing is a lot of fun to drive.. That is good news. It sounds like the REx was able to hold SOC with some spirited driving as long as you had fuel....

No Sunroof in the US: Confirmed

It is interesting that you lost 5% SOC on that one leg. Here in the US we would not be able to activate the REx until it was below 5% SOC. That would probably have cause a limited power mode. If you don't mind me asking, How fast were you driving?

No sales tax on REx in NJ

BMW was over due for some good news on the i3... That is a nice one... I wonder if GA will follow suit...

Wow, that is a total shock...

I am probably going to pass on the i3...

I think I made the best decision for my situation in going with the Model S vs the i3, but after spending some time on some of the Tesla Forums, I can say that I greatly prefer the quality and level of discussion on this Forum.... ;) I came over here to read a little sanity...

real range of the Rex i3

I am glad that I decided not to order the i3 REx. It looks like the extra weight really makes the real world range about 60 miles on a charge... I would have thought a solid 70-80 miles would have been possible... It also looks like the decision of the U.S. REx to kick in at 5% charge is a...

i3 REx Reportedly Does Not Qualify for California White HOV

This looks to be real... http://www.thestreet.com/story/12221040/1/bmw-suffers-big-setback-against-tesla-in-california.html Now there is NO good reason for BMW not to allow you to start the REx under 80% charge like the rest of the world and put in a little bigger fuel tank..... If this is...

BEV i3 or REx i3? Which one to choose?

Tom, That was the best and most fair article I have read about BEV vs BEV+REx. As you know I really liked the i3. I thought it was one of the best EV designs that I had seen from a major manufacturer. I like the light weight design. People who have never driven light weight cars will simply...

    BMW i3 REx vs Tesla S 60kwh

It would make sense that a 2700lb car would have a lighter foot print than a 4700lb car with similar drive lines. I also think you are being a little too friendly with the Model S in the Georgia example. 63% gas operation seems a little too high % of operation. I drive a lot in and around...

    BMW i3 REx vs Tesla S 60kwh

For me it boiled down to this. I would have to have the REX to handle my daily driving. The tesla could easily hande it in EV mode only. I just did not like having to put gas in my electric car. It removes some of the best things I like about EV's.... If the i3 had 150 miles of EV range I...

I'll lurk around. I am still quite taken with the design and engineering of the i3...

I am probably going to pass on the i3...

Well, It is official, I ordered the Model S. I just love the EV range it has. If the i3 could realistically do 150 miles on a charge, I would have picked it over the Model S. It is more comfortable to me and I like it's quirky looks... I still think they should do something to cover up...

Thanks Tom. I am sure that you are right. I think the REx is probably the best range assist currently on the market. It is light an compact...

I am probably going to pass on the i3...

Tom I do appreciat all you do to help people understand these new cars. I just wish BMW would make a statement like you just did. I understand the there will be limitations. I would think that they would want to put some parameters around the use of the REx. I personally think that it would...

I am probably going to pass on the i3...

I have really been thinking about the BMW i3 a lot lately. First, I have to say that I really like the i3 and think it is an excellent design. However, I know that the BEV model does not have enough range to suit my daily driving. I have to keep a milage log and about twice a week I exceed...

BMW to omit SOC on US model i3?

I work with computer system all day every day. What they can do is amazing, but I would not trust them as far as I could throw them. My point is simple, no matter how good it is, and I admit it is good, I want a quick sanity check that I can do in a few seconds with a 0-100% value. If it wigs...
