When there are covers on the brake calipers, are they unable to dissipate heat into the air when braking? I suppose the regenerator does some of the braking for you but it is not in the front of the car.

No. there will be no heat issues. It just a 2-3mm thick metal plate that is clipped on with a custom retainer. Most of the caliper is exposed behind it anyways and open to the air. And besides that, it's an i3, not a M3, and I'll never drive this car to the extent that I should worry about overheating the brakes.
