i've read 'proper' pre-conition only happens when plugged in. But if I want to pre-condition every day but no real need/don't want to charge up battery every day then how is this done?
I assume it's matching up the low cost tariff timing & departure time so charging kicks in 10-15 mins before departure time to start pre-condition (I know this also means battery will be charged a little as well)

Or do I just get organised in the morning and plug in 10-15 mins before I want to leave and set to charge immediately with pre-condition?

Every time you start the car up, unless you are already in the sweet zone, it will potentially attempt to condition things to its liking...IOW, if it is really cold or really hot, it will condition the battery to keep it in the sweet zone. If you're connected to an EVSE at the time, 99% or more of that energy comes out of the wall rather than the batteries (well, it is mostly a wash if the batteries are full - the car converts the ac to dcv, but the batteries are almost a pass-through in that mode). So, if you are interested in maximum range, do it while still connected. Now, nothing 'wrong' with preconditioning the cabin to make it more comfortable, but it will have an impact on range if not currently plugged in.

THe act of driving off will heat the battery up some as discharging it isn't a perfect conversion...there is some heat generated. In the summer, that can be a problem, in the winter, it can help.

The vehicle can not performed preconditioning without being plugged into a wall charger. Also if you are to precondition the interior the battery will also be preconditioned.

Not true for mine. When I have a reoccurring departure time set and the precondition box checked, the car will go through the cycle regardless of whether it's plugged in or not.

The car will always precondition the cabin for you, whether plugged in or not. It will not precondition the battery pack unless plugged in and you set a departure time.

What I'd like to see is for it to precondition both the cabin and the batteries if you just tell it to precondition rather than having to set a departure time if it is plugged in. OFten do things spur of the moment, and anything that can be done to improve comfort and range would be nice when just telling it to precondition.

Hi guys,
minor nitpicking: when the SOC is below ~50%, preconditioning the interior without plugging in is not possible.

hi not wanting to hijack the thread but I have a preconditioning question.... what I'd like to do is have the car plugged in and fully charged and then the battery pre warmed before the start my journey but set off with 100% charge is this possible? Basically can i draw electricity to pre warm at the same rate as the car recharges?

It's my understanding that if you set a departure time and the car is plugged in and already charged, it will condition the batteries and the cabin.
