Do you mean it's not opening? The tank is pressurized and it takes some amount of time to release the pressure before you can open the door. Someone else posted to hold the button down for a few seconds and you will see a message on the dash that when it's ok to open, or some such thing. Search this forum and you'll find it.

Just dropped mine off at the dealer this morning. Apparently if there is something up with the REX system, the fuel door will not open except by the emergency release under the hood.

The dealer called late this morning to say that the fuel pressure sensor was bad.

Good to know that I am not the only one. With 3 days to run to the end of my warranty, this happened to me yesterday after a prolonged use of the REx. Pressing the de-pressurisation button gives a Ready to Refuel at 25% message but the flap stays locked. Pulling the Frunk ‘emergency’ toggle releases the flap. The fuel cap then releases easily but no obvious release of pressure. I have it booked in for investigation: I will mention the possibility that it is the fuel sensor.

Yours wouldn't happen to be a 2015? If so, can I ask the month is was made? You can lookup the manufactured date here: http://bimmer.work/

Our 2015 (born in July) - (we didn't know at the time) had a Fuel Pressure sensor that was failing on a long road trip, where we had to rely on the REx. 9 out of 10 times, we had to do the manual pressure purge (green tab) to open the fuel tank...then in the middle of the trip, the REx drive train would not come on - luckily opening and closing the fuel door/opening the cap restarting the car a few times, eventually it came back online....after getting the fuel pressure sensor replaced, everything functioned as it should (open fuel door without issues, no REx drivetrain issues, etc)

I read somewhere that BMW started using a different/better? Fuel Pressure sensor sometime during late 2015 or early 2016....If yours is a late 2015 - if the rumor is true, then maybe they got around to putting the different/better Fuel Pressure sensor sometime in 2016....

2014 I3 REX Electronaut edition. Bought from non-BMW dealer with two months of remaining BMW warranty. On my first drive and after using REX, fuel tank lid cover won't open. A Message about 25% appreared, and the nav screen saying to open the cover manually. Pulling on the green cord under the hood (next to the wiper fluid tank) released the cover. For every refuel, I had to release it manually. A BMW dealer is checking on it now.

Hello everyone. I have the same issue on my 2015. I haven’t put gas in it for maybe 18 months but now need to refresh the gas and open the cover to do my emission test and it hasn’t been opening! The dealerships in my area (Atlanta) have been pretty bad in terms of appoitnments and i need to open it manually. First time i pulled too hard and broke the green cable. Was able to find it but pulling is not helping me. Any tips? I used to love this car but have been frustrated lately and happy to be returning it in a couple of months:)
Thanks

Very common issue with mid 2015 or older i3 rex. Dealership replaced it in 3 days under warranty. And BMW sent a letter offering free extended warranty on it for additional 10 year/120 miles!!

Got a 2015 REx with intermittent fuel door issues too but when I put my last 7 VIN into http://bimmer.work/ but I keep getting a message “something went wrong, try again later” would you happen to know why?
Thanks

Dealer fixed our fuel flap under warranty last week. It had stopped working and threw a code. Even emergency pull cord stopped working. Dealer called it a recall. 2015 REx.

I couldn’t open the fuel flap on my 2015 i3 with 3 days left on my warranty. I managed to get a dealer to look at it and they replaced the fuel sensor a week later. No problems since.

Hi

My 2015 (out of warranty) REX has the same problem. Holding the button makes no difference, it is just showing 25%.

Does any one know the approximate cost for this repair?

Best regards Bo

Hi

Managed to fix my car again.

The repair cost when out of warranty is approximately 5000DKK, 3700DKK labour and 1300DKK for the new sensor.

I ended up not replacing the sensor, but re calibrating the old one using ISTA+.

Everything works fine now, and i hope it stays that way.

Best regards Bo

@bopjensen how did you do that. Do you have any instructions please?

Interesting that re-calibrating the sensor worked. BMW of North America has issued a 10 year limited warranty on this sensor so it appears they know there is some sort of design/manufacturing flaw.

Why did you have to pay anything if there was a recall on this specific item? Your warranty status should not affect recall items IMO!
