But I think the answer is pretty common to all: Power the car into Drive-ready state. Select N (neutral). Turn off Drive-ready state but leave the car in Standby state. Note that you may need to watch carefully and repeat if the procedure to pull the car out takes longer than 15 minutes (the car powers-off at 15 mins and automatically engages Park as part of that stage).

And... if it's in deep, you may need to consider having it lifted out.

Many thanks MOJO, you have been a great help and the car came out of the mud this morning having put up quite a fight. The car being so heavy my wife and I, both in our mid eighties struggled to even rock the car to prove that neutral had been engaged. I will download the BMW app.
