What is the roof like with a moonroof?

Hi guys, in the first years of production (like my first i3) the roof was made out of clear-coated cfrp for both cars with and without sunroof. They switched over to a painted aluminium roof for the cars with sunroof later (like my current i3). Regards, Steven

    i3 Milestones

Hi Bo, I have no real advice or battery tips. Keep in mind that the battery is never actually charged to its real maximum capacity though. This ‘ceiling’ is controlled by the Battery Management System (BMS). This *should* protect the battery from premature wear. I simply always plug our car...

    i3 Milestones

Hi guys, (blowing dust from thread… ;) ) it's been a while since I posted. Only 24 hours in a day you know… So, a quick update: 100.000 miles covered! 4.5 years running. The battery is ok but not as good as new. 85% health I would say. I’m still not sure if this is because of wear or related...

    Possible to retrofit heated seats?

Keep in mind that in some markets (like here in the Netherlands) the optional pre-heat system of the high voltage battery is tied to the seat heating ('Pre-heat package 4T9'). It might be a good idea to decide if you want/need it and check out if the prospective car has it.

Removing Rex to use as back up generator for solar system

Hi guys, the REx has no starter motor. It is started from the HV battery using the generator as motor, like Jim said. Regards, Steven

    i3 Milestones

Hi guys, not much to report but three years since 'i' was born, last week. 68000 miles and counting. Gas usage decreasing steadily. Best effort so far, last summer: mid may to mid december without refueling, 9250 miles. And not by cheating driving short distances only ! :) In winter, fuel...

charging port door grinding sound when opened

Hi, yes. We had the grinding issue exactly as you described. Had it replaced under warranty about a month ago. The part took it's sweet time to appear from backorder. Regards, Steven

    Rear wiper

Hi guys, this is much like in our previous 3-series, where the automatic wipers, switched on with the stalk (aka. the hardware switch, if you like), did not come on after a restart, even when the stalk position indicated ‘automatic’. BMW told us that this is intended behaviour. They said it is...

    Install Thule roof rack tracks

Hi Jim, europe calling ;) . The roof of our car, with sunroof, was made out of CFRP, like yours. They switched to an aluminium roofpanel icw. the sunroof a while ago (a year ? - some other minor modifications were introduced alongside). I doubt this had anything to do with US regulations...

BMW revamps "i" electric car division to focus on self-drivi

Hi Epirali, yes, Volkswagen/Audi is a contender, but a relatively weak one. I'm not looking at their tainted image here, or their state of finance, and I don't doubt their engineering prowess. What is rather disappointing is that VW's goals, according to a statement of VWs CSO Jürgen Stackmann...

BMW revamps "i" electric car division to focus on self-drivi

Up the creek. No paddle. It's starting to look like our next car, in about three years, won't be a BMW after all. This, amongst other signals, really doesn't bode well for our EU car industry. Regards, Steven

    I did it !

Hi Brice, I beg to differ 8-) Sure, Switzerlands charging infrastructure could be better, but we've been driving our i3 in CH numerous times now. We've hardly ever used our REx inland, save for the trip from/to Holland. It has to be said that we never buy a 'Vignette', since we travel in CH...

BMW Loses Core Development Team For i3 & i8

Hi guys, since I’ve read in an interview with one of GMs big shots that he/she was proud of the amount of LG parts in the new Bolt, making it essentialy a LG Bolt with Chevy logo, I’ve come to realise that it is quite well possible that the biggest push forward in EV-land will not be comming...

    I did it !

Hi Brice, congrats ! Switzerland is, much like Holland, ideally suited for elctrodriving ! Regards, Steven

Who reached 50 000 Miles or more ?

Hi guys, Tom is going to overtake us sometime (soon), but we have crossed 50000 miles just last week. Currently 50500 miles on the clock. A few light interior vibrations on occasion (from new, not worsened), some early adopters woes (as expected since our car is one of the very first REx-es)...

Why Tesla is going to dominate for the next 5yrs

Hi Boatguy, thanks for the info. I'm not a financial buff, so I've got some trouble wrapping my head around it, and it's a little off-topic perhaps, but isn't it so that Tesla has ~2.5b debt and BMW ~85b, if the numbers of the Financial Times are anything to go by ? Is this real debt or just...

Why Tesla is going to dominate for the next 5yrs

Hi guys, firstly: I have always lauded Tesla for making the electric car desirable. What they did right was pioneering new technology in a market sector where money is less of an issue. Much like Mercedes is always introducing new features in the S class, trickling down the range over the...

I3 stops charging if I stay in the car

Hi guys, with our car, charging stops when you unlock. If you lock it again, charging commences immediately. If you don't lock it, it starts charging again by itself after a minute or two. Regards, Steven

    i3's about as eco-friendly as...?

Hi guys, the Co2 production per kWh seems about right, but a consumption figure of 444Wh/km seems ludicrous. Even if it is a Tesla P90D. Something must have gone wrong in the 'emissions' test. Regards, Steven
