Just looked at my front shocks and noticed the dust shields are completely falling apart on a 2015 car, looked at my other one which is a 2016 car and it’s the same, I assume this is a common problem?
Tip: difficult to notice when the car is on the ground but easy to see when it is jacked up
Only seems to affect the front as the rear has a hard plastic whereas the front is more flexible rubber

Common problem, unfortunately. The labor required for replacement makes the repair cost quite high. BMW really dropped the ball when it approved these dust covers.

FWIW mine were the same but were replaced under warranty. Seems most people have been able to get BMW to cover the replacement for free (if still within warranty).
