Many people have used their REx for extended trips. Lots of anecdotes on the i3 Facebook page. While coding (or DVDInMotion) to enable REx Hold adds a lot of flexibility, you can theoretically (and in practice) just keep driving on the REx with stops to fill up the tank periodically. My experience in filling my tank (admittedly only bought gas 4 times since Dec) is that each stop takes ~90 seconds. You literally turn on the pump, grab the window washer and almost before you get back to the car, the pump shuts off.

Without the REx hold function, you'd have be be pretty careful around hills, and driving on the interstate might not be advisable depending on the length of a hill. Here are some links to a blog post that goes into great detail about the power consumption necessary to climb with the REx

The blog at bmwi3.blogspot.com is a good resource and is run by Tom, one of the moderators here.

BTW, one other option you have for coding is to have it done remotely. I've seen references to codemycar.com that are very positive. Unlimited coding (e.g. any option you want) plus recodes after updates for $150. Same concept as DVDInMotion (e.g. you don't have to learn how to do it), but not quite as simple.

Wow, I'll look into that coding option as well, thank you for the additional info.

I just sent in my offer to my CA. CROSSING FINGERS!
