    Is your air con cold?

I had a problem that initially looked like the air con wasn't working - the car became stifling hot even with the air con on. The problem 'resolved' itself when I removed the mobile phone holder that was partially covering up the right hand vent in the centre console. There must be a sensor in...

MY FIRST, LONG AND DISAPOINTING DRIVE

I ordered the Rex without CCS, mostly based on my experience driving a Leaf for the last three years. Maybe in another three years the rapid charging infrastructure will have improved enough, but right now it is way too unreliable and patchy. Stopping for a couple of minutes to fill up with...

    REx is not a panacea!

Having gone from a Leaf to an i3 Rex I can't imagine ever going back to a short range EV like the i3 BEV. The Rex makes long journeys possible, you just keep filling up the tank. It's really not that much hassle to stop and fill up a few times on a long journey. In day to day use I also find...

    Failed to Charge

This has now happened twice more, both last night and the night before it failed to take any charge at all. On walking up to the car, pressing 'unlock' on the remote shows a white light, but if you sneak up on it and press 'lock' to get to show the current charging status then it's as if it...

    [UK] Dealer added costs

There is plenty of room in the front under the bonnet (hood) for the cables. DC charge points have the cable attached, so this is just for the AC points. You'll have two AC cables, one with the integrated EVSE for slow charging from domestic sockets and the type 2 cable for faster public charging.

    [UK] Dealer added costs

Assuming this is the blue type-2 to type-2 cable, it's pretty good value and you will need it to charge from public 16A or 32A charging stations. In the UK our fast (or slow) charging stations (3-7 hours) are all moving to Type 2 sockets, so you need a cable to use them. Rapid chargers (30...

    Service, intervals and content...

The condition based servicing shown in the iPhone app is telling me my first service for 'Brake Fluid' and 'Inspection' is 2 years from new. There is no service book, it's all electronic. That's for a Rex in the UK though. I'm sure at some point it will ask for some other service depending on...

New details regarding the US spec range extender

It seems odd that the BMW USA website is showing 2.4gal: http://www.bmwusa.com/Standard/Content/Vehicles/2014/i3/BMWi3RangeExtender/Features_and_Specs/BMWi3RangeExtenderSpecifications.aspx Do you think that the website is out of date?

    What Car? BMW i3 long-termer

There are some advantages to the BMW wall box: 1. It has a shelf where you can stow your driving gloves while you plug in. 2. It has a built in cupboard. No really, it does. The central part opens up with enough space to store something that you don't mind getting nicked because it doesn't have...

    Failed to Charge

Yes, it was locked and the light was definitely blue when I plugged in last night. I agree that's what it looks like - at some point the car decided it didn't have a cable attached and went back to the white mode. Odd.

    Failed to Charge

This just happened again to me. Charge port light was white, but the car didn't take any charge at all over night. (I checked the power logs from the house meter.) No red lights anywhere, Wallbox was happy and blue. Turn the car on and the main display says: "High voltage battery not fully...

Is the i3 "Too European" for the US?

In the UK there has been mostly (astonishingly for an EV) positive press, including from die-hards like TIff Needell (racing driver / tv car reviewer): https://twitter.com/tiff_tv/status/454294446423965696 "Just said goodbye to my electrifying BMW i3. Can't believe now much I enjoyed it. Felt...

    Public charging problem

I tried to use a public charging station over the weekend, an Electrobay 305: http://www.elektromotive.com/pages/products/index.html Blue BMW supplied cable, car set to charge at Max, but the charging station just sat there saying 'The car is not drawing any power'. Which is true, it wasn't...

    Charge unit installation at work

This is a nice alternative to the BMW one if you are looking for something less chunky (and less blue): http://nuworldenergy.co.uk/shop.php#!/~/product/category=9061308&id=35326751 £186 inc VAT.

    Charge unit installation at work

Back before home charger grants were available many early Leaf owners bought and had their own EVSEs installed by local electricians. IIRC I paid around £800 for a 32A version back then. My advice would be to pick one with a Type 2 socket rather than a tethered version - it will then be useful...

    Failed to Charge

Don't think so.. the iPhone app did send me an alert on Sunday saying that the estimated charge completion time had changed, which was nice, but it did complete the charge anyway, and yesterday was fine. If it happens again I'll call the dealer.

    Failed to Charge

Has anyone else had issues with the i3 failing to charge overnight during off peak hours? It has been fine, charging exactly as expected, but last night something didn't work right and it didn't draw any power. This morning when unlocking the charging flap flashed red and there was a message...

    Charging query

I figure I'll leave it to hit 100% and see what it does tomorrow. It charged fine all last week, albeit using the 10A charging brick because we've only just had the Wallbox installed. I wish there was a 'why are you doing this???' button.

    Charging query

To be honest, I'm not sure now. I just got home with 75% (ish) charge, plugged it in and the wallbox started to flash blue, but the car socket is a steady blue. Checking the meter it is drawing 4kW, but the dash shows the timer is set and doesn't show it charging. What is it doing with the...
