UK members may be interested in the four page article in this week's Autocar magazine (7 Jan 15 issue) which gives an insight into BMW's future thinking:
- All BMW's from the 3-series upwards starting in the 2022 model year to get electric power.
- The combustion engine will mainly act as a generator, in effect future models will become all-wheel drive range-extender electric vehicles.
- Lightweight, multi-material bodyshells
75% of BMW's (inc MINI) sales are from 3 series upwards so getting fleet target Co2 emissions down to 50g/km by 2025 presents a big challenge.
This strategy is clearly being led by the investment in the i3 and i8 so we i3 owners (and prospective owners) are at the forefront of leading this technological charge. I guess it is reassuring to know that if this is the direction BMW is going that they are going to be committed to the i3 product line and to keeping owners happy.
