BMW i talks about larger EV, increased i3 range in 2016

Botox for your i3 does not appeal.

    DC charging, how fast?

If so, a non-engineer like me would expect that the sensitivity of charging rate to ambient temperature would reduce once the rate of charge started to fall such that by the time it has fallen to L2 7kWh level, the cooling system would be able to cope fully with battery heating without having to...

The LAPD is using an i3 as police car

If they think an i3 is puny they should see an Italian Carabinieri golf buggy with blue lights!

BMW may have to up the ante soon...

I haven't been monitoring the battery capacity via the hidden menu but I'd be gobsmacked if it has lost anywhere near the implied percentage in 11 months and 14k miles. Anecdotally it feels 'as new'.

After 6 months of REx, 95.8% of our journeys were electric

Likewise as regards the description of the car. I regard it as an electric car with a £3k insurance policy that I paid for so I don't get stranded when an en route charger is down. I have nothing whatsoever against those who have chosen the BEV but wouldn't be too sympathetic if one thought I...

    GOM range algorithm

If you have set a destination in the satnav the range prediction is significantly lower when motorway is involved.

    DC charging, how fast?

I monitored the volts and amps on a 50kW charger on an occasion when my next charge was going to have to be a short top up from a 7kW unit to get me to the next rapid. Clearly it made sense for me to stay on the first rapid until the charge rate dropped below 7kW, provided I wasn't blocking the...

Off peak charging and minimum SOC

I'm pretty sure that if it starts to charge outside the off-peak window because of a low SoC it continues to charge rather than cutting out when a threshold is reached. My understanding was that the SoC below which it ignores off-peak is 30% but your experience would suggest otherwise.

rex range in the uk winter time

But it isn't completely reliable. I had a longish trip early in my ownership when the BMW servers were down and iRemote wasn't being updated and it seemed to default to treating all the mileage as REx until comms appeared to return as RTTI re-appeared after having been absent. I had expected...

    Portable charger

A random thought when unplugging the (UK) 13A charger and coiling the cable to stow it in the boot in case I wanted to use it while away for a couple of days.... ...why is the cable from the unit to the type 2 connector much thicker and heavier than the cable from the 13A plug to the unit? I...

    Professional Nav - Route Selection

I've had the roadworks problem too, altho sometimes it works. Yesterday afternoon, coming down the M6/M5 from the Lakes to Ross on Wye I could see the M50 J1/J2 night time closure on the overhead gantries and on the screen but it wasn't until I was about 30 miles away that it re-routed me...

    UK used i3s on Autotrader

I really don't see anything controversial at all. The whole BEV v REx thing, with or without DC etc, is entirely personal, depending on needs and on reasons for buying an i3. Now, what would be controversial would be if a BEV driver turned up at a public charging station just after a REx...

Make an electric plane with Airbus

As a sweeping generalisation carbon fibre is increasingly common in current GA aircraft, as are efficient small capacity engines, unless the names Cessna, Piper, Lycoming or Continental appear!

    Quiet sound from Bluetooth connection

+1 Also, as someone who has no previous experience of streaming music using Bluetooth I was surprised to find that the volume setting on the phone also affected the final volume. I had assumed that the digital information would be streamed independently of volume and that volume would be...

Departure Time, Battery precon and off-peak charging

Returning to psquare's question, I use the off-peak functionality to try and get as much charging as possible whilst my solar panels are active, so at the moment my off-peak setting is 8am to 4pm. What I sometimes see is that it doesn't start charging at 8am but waits and starts at a time that...

It seems odd that stability control doesn't cut in immediately to prevent the wheel spinning up excessively in the first place.

DC Fast Charging: battery SOC vs power absorbed

Your third threshold of interest tallies with my own amateur observation. Some while ago I posted that if on a UK motorway one is in the situation of two rapid chargers out of range of each other with a 7kWh (or 3 phase 22kWh) charger in between, one should stay on the first rapid charger until...

5000 miles now after 6 weeks of ownership

I find it very hard indeed to believe that the slower 25kWh unit would be "about the same (time) to 100%." Surely the max charge rate will be an envelope that is at or above 50kWh until, say 80% (although in reality I think it starts to reduce before 80%), then starts to fall until reaching...
