    Max current on L1?

And the actual inherent inefficiencies have been shown to be quite minor. L1 is great is your driving pattern works with it. It certainly does for me.

How do you charge your i3

totally happy with level one and will not be installing a level two charger.

Level 1 vs Level 2 Charging

Yes, perhaps 2% to 3%, which will cost me ~ $10/year. There is this link as well: TinyURL.com/mdwhjns And, check out this thread: http://www.mybmwi3.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=1712 I drive 35 to 55 miles/day and have no need for Level 2 and will not be installing it. It only makes sense...

Why does Geico charge so much to insure the i3?

Pay 584 euros in the US ($758 usd) for all the insurance-medical,liability, etc. comparing just the cost to fix damage to the car, collision and non-collision, to a 2006 Suburu Outback worth about $8,000 usd: BMW 247 euro ($322 usd) Subaru 130 euro ($170 usd) this is per year costs.

Why does Geico charge so much to insure the i3?

We insure through Costco (Ameriprise, which is American Express, with IDL as the underwriter) and it is a lot less than the quotes I get from Geico. I was shocked how little the i3 cost to insure.

    Charging rate question

jadnashuanh, I posted the 2.1% and it seems low to me as well. EPA appears to assume the charger is 90% efficient when they calculate the wall-to-battery loss component baked into the eMPG ratings. They appear to be relying on a study ( TinyURL.com/mdwhjns ) that seems to say: "The...

    Home Charger

Agree, we have put off plans for a level 2. For us the Level 1 is enough.

How many months of inactivity until i3 battery depletes?

We just left our car in a garage for 30 days and the charge fell from 74 to 71%. Also we got an email from the car (well, from BMW) as it detected that the car had not been on a charger for three weeks and wanted to remind us to check the charge level. Weird.

    Charging rate question

Thanks for all of the information, very helpful. Got off my lazy ass and did the google thing, on page 11 of: An Assessment of Level 1 and Level 2 Electric Vehicle Charging Efficiency found at: tinyurl.com/lffl8zo it says "Level 2 charging would likely yield approximately 2.1% efficiency...

    Charging rate question

Ultraturtle, your state" charging at the maximum rate available when possible saves you money, and saves us all CO2 emissions", can you elaborate? We had planned on installing a level 2 charger but we find that the very basic charger is enough for us. Given that our power is Hydro generated and...

Recharge rates Maximum, reduced and something else.

I think this has all been stated elsewhere, but the NEC (US electrical code) states that a continuous load can't exceed 80% of the over-current protection. So if you have a circuit breaker or fuse of 15 amps, the max allowable would be 12 amps. If a 20 amp circuit, then the max load is 16...

    Home Charging Station

Direct answer to your question- No, it is not absolutely necessary. Yesterday I drove 72 miles and ended with 12 miles of range, that is as dead as I ever want to be. Plugged in at 5 pm, this morning at 7 am it was fully charged. 40 miles/day won't be a problem. That said I plan on a...

    Home Charging Station

Mt pattern i the same as yours, and the 120 volt charger is enough. Now, today was an exception, I ended up driving 77 miles and have 12 miles 'in the tank'. When plugged in at 5pm it says I will have a full charge at 8:15am, 15 hours. I'm planning on getting a Clipper Creek, but actually could...

First i3 in NYS Capital District

One way to estimate the general condition of an electrical system is to look at the panels to see who made them. Fuses- not good. Zinsco panel/Circuit breakers Really Bad GE, Square D, Cutler Hammer, Good Also, there is no magic to installing a charger, when it is inside it's halfway between...

Who manufactures the REX W20 engine?

I don't know for sure who make this engine, but it's a fact that BMW got many 650cc and later 800cc motors from Rotax, an Austrian company that also makes light aircraft engines. And the BMW 650 was originally entirely made in Italy by Aprilia with that Rotax engine. No BMW employee or factory...

    Most energy efficient travelling speed

That was an interesting question. An article that relates is http://bmwi3owner.com/2014/05/range-for-speed-2/#more-244 Using the information from that, converting to miles per hour, and then assuming the i3 has a usable capacity of 15KWh (leaves a 20% safety margin, 18.8KWh x .8 = 15KWh)...

    Tracking i3 efficiency

Hey Brian, There is one other option you might be able to explore. It is very limited, won't work for some people, but might work for you and is dirt cheap. Get a P3 kill-a-watt meter for $28, downgrade your 120 volt charging option to the reduced (12amp) rate and charge off of a 120 volt...

Do you have an i3 on order and awaiting delivery?

Yes, I am so out of jail now. My Panda Edition will be available mid-week, and it is going to be interesting given that my current car, a Volvo V40, I have had for 14 years and was developed in 1994, released in '95. So I am going from 20 year old technology to emerging technology in one step...

Do you have an i3 on order and awaiting delivery?

Seems like a lot of i3's being held at the port for whatever reason were released today and the dealers are calling and setting up acceptance appointments.

Do you have an i3 on order and awaiting delivery?

I ordered my i3 6 or 8 months ago, and when told that the fancy 'launch edition' would come a lot sooner I waited, being in no real hurry and preferring what I ordered. In the end, people who went that route at exactly the same time have cars right next to mine, so that worked out OK. Then I...
