Hi,

I’m planning to replace my current car by an EV. My use will be mainly (i.e. 99%) urban (in Paris). I have tried the only two EVs that are worth considering for me : Zoe from Renault and i3. I have had the i3 for 1 day in BEV version and I also tried it a few hours in REX version.

During my one day test of the i3 BEV, I did 90km. 60km of highway with a speed varying from 90 to 150 km/h and 30km of city streets (30-50 km/h with a lot of stop and go).

At the end of the day I had only 10km left (and I started with a battery fully loaded). AC and lights were on during all day, and the car was in normal mode (i.e. not eco or eco +)

I’m a little surprised by the remaining km at the end of the day. It does not fit with both what BMW says and what I’ve read here and elsewhere. Even the BMW guy was surprised and told me that I had a lot more than 10km in fact.

Have you already experienced that ? Having the autonomy at a certain level and finally do a lot more (I say a lot because normally I should have had between 30 and 50km left according to the BMW specs) ? Have you also experienced having done around only 100km with a full charge ? In what cases ?

Thanks,

J.

Last week I drove 162km with 10% SOC left with my REx, the following charge was 158km with 12% SOC remaining.

If you go as fast as 150 km/h, range will drop extremely.

Plus, bmw's claims are not in comfort mode, but in ECO PRO/+.
You really have to drive carefully, accelerate slowly, to get the maximum range, and without AC or cabin heat.

I drove a REx for 2 days in Toronto and driving "normally" for me (comfort, fast acceleration, some AC), city and highway, I was getting 100-120 km on a battery charge. Had I driven the BEV, that would have been about 12% higher, if I recall (due to the lighter weight).

Hi Frank, What is your average speed you usually drive at?

-Phil

My average speed according to board computer is around 50 km/h. I am driving country roads with 70-90 km/h and a lot of short distance urban, which results in low average speed, because I am standing and creeping a lot in stop and go. In urban driving range would be highest. My range would be significantly higher without all those hills here.

I think a total range of 100km is definitely normal if you drive in comfort at high speed. Personally, I find that my i3 has an average range of around 130km in daily use.

Same for me... mixed driving gives me around 85-90 miles daily. .. A more careful (but not supa careful) drive during the weekend I covered 85 miless with a predicted 15 remaining suggesting 100 miles.

Salut voisin,
Parisian dealer's cars have around 160km autonomy. Don't drive it like an M3
Awaiting mine for september, will tell you more then

That's the issue. I do have a Z3M for the WE, it gives you very bad driving habits ;) I clearly drove the i3 as I usually drive, mainly because I don't want to have to constantly trade comfort (drive style and AC is also part of comfort) against autonomy. I wanted to see what would be the real autonomy of the i3 with the way I'll use it.

By the way, acceleration up to 100km/h is really really good on the i3. I couldn't do a A/B comparison with the Z3M but it is not far...

BMW says that up to 40-mph (about 70km/hr), the i3 is the fastest car they currently sell. Now, the REx is slower than the BEV, but it's still pretty fast!

Having driven an M3 and M5, I find that claim extremely hard to believe. The acceleration from standing of the i3 is not very fast.

Here you go. i3 is faster than M3 off the line.

Great.. have added this to my owner playlist

Up to about 40mph, the i3 is the fastest BMW being sold. Max torque at zero RPM and a single speed transmission means it moves out. Certainly above that, something like the M3 and lots of other vehicles will dust it easily, but in its environment - as a city car, the i3 is plenty brisk, but just like fast starts on any car, it can play hell with the fuel/energy supply.

As a I3 BEV owner, and also a 2011 Z4 sDrive 3.5i I can vouch for it's speed off the line. It is so much fun to dust off unsuspecting victims! The only problem is now my Z4 doesn't really feel that fast anymore......

Also keep in mind the REX version is considerably slower (7.9 REX vs. 7.0 BEV 0-60 diff.)
